Sean McLaughlin: Cut Anchors, Get Rid Of Producers

I would argue that Sean McLaughlin doesn’t exactly have the strongest resume.

He got pushed out at Scripps after helping gut the product, getting rid of experienced people, and bringing in young kids.

He then landed a job at Graham Media, and he seems intent on doing it all over again.

McLaughlin is often featured by the website TV news check and each time he is, FTVLive’s inbox blows up. Most of the emails call out McLaughlin and talk about their time working for him. None of the emails offer up glowing reviews.

In the latest McLaughlin PR from TV news check, McLaughlin suggests getting rid of the anchor, who is often the highest-paid person at a TV station.

TV news check writes, ““We have to make tough choices going forward,” McLaughlin said. “There are no more things to trim out of these budgets. We are revenue-challenged, and there is more pressure on the expense base. Getting rid of the anchor is a way to trim the expense base and create something different that doesn’t look like everything else in the market.”

McLaughlin suggested replacing the anchor with more multimedia journalists on the ground. “It’s all about feet on the street, with local sales forces and local journalists,” he said.

To that end, McLaughlin also proposed cutting back on producers and replacing them with content gatherers.”

If I were an Anchor or Producer at a Graham Media station, I would be watching my back.

Just staying…
