Over a week ago, FTVLive told you that CNN was this/close to naming former New York Times and BBC chief Mark Thompson as the new head of the struggling network.

The network “leaked” the story that they were close to hiring Thompson as a “test” if you will, to see what reaction would be.

After being happy with the reaction, CNN has now named Thompson the next president of the cable news network.

Thompson takes over for Chris Licht lasted just a short time before getting fired.

No doubt, the guy has his work cut out for himself. CNN lost all credibility, along with its ratings under Jeff Zucker. Licht came in and was too slow to make changes, and now Thompson takes over a network that is a shell of its former self.

The biggest problem is the CNN brand is basically dead. The trust in the network is gone and more often than not, when someone mentions CNN, it’s part of a punchline.

We’ll see how Thompson does, but unless he is ready to basically blow the place up, I would not hold my breath.
