Acting LA News Director Gone
Pete Wilgoren is out as the acting News Director at The Firm’s LA station KTTV.
Wilgoren has been the acting ND for nearly a year, ever since Erica Hill left after just a couple years on the job.
At first, many expected Wilgoren to be named the News Director and lose the “acting” title, But, as time went on, it was clear that the station was going to go another direction.
Word is that a new News Director will be named on Wednesday.
How long that person keeps the job, remains to be seen.
Here is the internal email that Wilgoren sent the staff:
Hi everyone, Today I am announcing that I will be leaving FOX11. I could not be more grateful to all of you, General Manager Steve Carlston and the entire FOX leadership team for their support in my decision.
Steve and I have had some thoughtful conversations about the future of the newsroom in recent weeks and it is clear that right now what is important to the organization is that we have new outside leadership in the VP/News Director role to accompany our new direction across the station. No question a new perspective can be a good thing for everyone, me included, and as a result of our conversations, and with a heavy heart, I’ve made the decision to leave Fox11 to pursue my own new direction. I’m excited to see what’s next.
It’s been my privilege to lead the team for the past eleven months during the transitions between news directors and also general managers. This newsroom picked me up at a very important point in my career. And the time with Fox11 over the past nearly seven years will always be some of the most amazing and creative and challenging and memorable times I have EVER experienced. Watching the many people in this newsroom finding your own voice and lanes for success, YOU all, make me proud. None of this would have been possible without you: Expanding Good Day LA last September to seven hours, launching ‘The Issue Is’ which is now in every California market, launching ‘In Depth’, creating the award winning documentary team, seeing our growing success on digital, they’ve all been career highlights.
I wish you nothing but success in this next chapter when your new VP of News is announced. Keep swinging for the fences. We all know this business is big and yet so very small at the same time. So stay in touch, and we’ll see you down the road. My last day will be May 24th. In the meantime, I will be working on transition plans with the managers who I know will take very good care of this newsroom in the interim.
Pete
