Why Fox News Dumped Tucker Carlson
An interesting read from the Wall Street Journal about why Fox News finally pulled the plug on Tucker Carlson.
You can read the story here, but basically, it says that Carlson was an asshole to be around, thought he was untouchable, was a pain for management to deal with, used vulgar language, and was not an easy sale to advertisers.
Carlson got big ratings, but big ratings don’t mean much when major advertisers don’t want to buy time in his show.
In TV, you can be a huge pain in the ass, but if you can’t bring in the money, then you aren’t worth the trouble.
Couple that will Carlson’s off-air remarks that were highlighted in the Dominion Voting System’s lawsuit and it was clear that Carlson was not worth keeping.
Fox News can replace Tucker Carlson, just like they replaced Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, and Megyn Kelly.
Even if Carlson’s replacement brings in a few hundred thousand fewer viewers than Carlson, if the big-name advertisers buy the time slot, Fox News still wins. Also, it is likely that whoever Fox names as a replacement will be paid much less than Carlson was paid.
But, here is the question that the Journal didn’t answer. How did Fox News let Carlson get so out of control? I talk to Fox News staffers, and they tell me that Carlson has basically been an asshole for years. He has used vulgar language for years. They say he talked down and about management for years.
So, why didn’t anyone reign him in?
Why didn’t Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott sit him down and read the riot act long before we got to Monday?
All companies have bad employees, but it’s management’s job to discover who those people are and fix the problem.
If they aren’t doing that, then what is management there for?
