No Secrets in TV Newsrooms

This happens all the time.

Someone in the newsroom tells a co-worker some news and then tells that co-worker not to say anything to anyone.

Well, we all know how that goes.

The co-worker then goes and tells someone else in the newsroom and adds, “but don’t say anything.” Of course, they do, and it is repeated until everyone knows.

After 42 years of doing the sports at KNBC, tonight will be Fred Roggin’s last night. He has decided to take a well-deserved retirement.

The funny thing was by the time he announced it, everyone already knew.

Roggin being Roggin, decided to talk about that.

We have enjoyed Fred Roggins work from afar and this business is losing a good one.

A few years ago, Roggin emailed FTVLive and we kept that email he sent secret, mainly because we didn’t want him to catch heat from the bosses at NBC.

But now that he is done, we wanted to share that email and just show you how classy this guy really is.

Job well done Fred!!

“Hey!!

Thanks for the mention.  I have great respect for you. (although I’m sure you know you may not be the most popular guy around some parts)  To start what you have and grown it like you have is truly remarkable in a fragmenting media world.  I read it every morning.  Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I learn, sometimes I disagree.  For those reasons, you make an impact. Keep it up! (and for gods sake never let anyone know I sent you this note).

Thanks again.
Fred”
