A News Director Weighs in on The Dancing Videos

Yesterday, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette did a fluff piece on the KDKA Anchors dancing on TikTok and how it was a way to reach younger viewers.

The story highlighted KDKA Weather person Mary Ours, who has 22,000 followers on TiKTok and posts dance videos often.

While the KDKA News Director tried to lay down some bullshit, another News Director emailed FTVLive, pointing this out.

Scott,

Saw today’s post. Further evidence, Nick Kosir, the dancing weatherman had 2 million followers and his newscasts got hash marks.

Social success has very little (or nothing) to do with ratings success.

And that is my point exactly.

Kosir was able to get a job at Fox Weather and I guess he’s still dancing, I really have no clue. But, despite having millions more followers than the Pittsburgh weather lady, his dancing did nothing for the station’s ratings.

Mary Ours says that no matter what, she is going to dance until she dies.

That’s great, but why do it on your station-branded social media?

I guess because her boss says that her dancing is “informative” and not just “entertainment.”
