Priced Out of the Market

Yesterday, FTVLive told you that Gray’s KVVU in Las Vegas has a current opening for a “Remote Producer” which is a full-time job that does not require you to live in Las Vegas.

Produce the newscasts from a remote location.

In other words, you can work for the Vegas station without ever stepping foot in the station, or even in Las Vegas.

It seems odd, but it is not surprising.

The average rent in Las Vegas is about $1500 a month. Want a fairly nice place you are looking at about $2000 a month.

That’s $24,000 a year just in rent. Now add food, gas, and utilities and you can see that there won’t be much money left over to live your life.

The same is happening in other markets and you will likely see jobs being posted for “remote” jobs in TV news.

Imagine a Producer you never met is putting together the newscast?

How long before the newsrooms have just a handful of people in them while the rest of the work is handled by remote employees.

We watched as TV stations got rid of Master Control and moved them to hubs. We watched TV stations get rid of art Departments and move them to hubs.

How long before your job could go the same way?

Let’s face it, for stations today, it is all about making, and saving money. Do you think any of them care about actual Journalism?
