The Good News....You Don't Have to Live in Bismarck
Okay, I will be honest, this is the first time I have ever seen a job posting like this.
The job posting is for a Reporter job at Gray’s KFYR in Bismarck, North Dakota, but if you take the job, you don’t have to ever live in Bismarck. In fact, you don’t have to live anywhere in North Dakota.
This is a “remote” Reporter job and while the station would like you to have some knowledge of the area, you don’t have to live there.
The listing says, “Can be from out of state. Knowledge of western North Dakota preferred but not required. General assignment reporter duties. Phone, zoom, Microsoft Word, basic journalism skills required.”
Basically, it sounds like you will do your interviews and live shots over Zoom.
I guess, trying to find people to up and move to Bismarck is so hard that they are offering a reporting job you can do from a beach house here in Florida.
Now, the entrepreneur in me thinks that if you can land 3 or 4 of these “remote reporting” jobs, you could make some decent cheese without ever having to leave your house.
But, the Gray job listing might have nipped that idea in the bud. It reads, “Employee agrees not to perform Services, authorize or permit the use of Employee’s name, image or likeness, or make personal appearances in connection with services performed for or by any other company, business or interest, which conflicts with the full and faithful performance of Employee's duties for Employer, without the prior written consent of Employer. Employee will not prepare or provide, for publication by persons or entities other than Employer.”
But hey, how will the bosses in Bismarck know, if you are also reporting for a station remotely In another market?
Maybe you are working as a freelance Reporter, you could pick this job up as a second gig and hopefully Bismarck won’t find out.
Worth a shot…right?
By the way, you can bet that other outlets after reading FTVLive will pick up this story on the unique “remote Reporter” job. Just remember where they stole it from and don’t hire those people to be your remote Reporter. They can’t be trusted.
