Saying C-Ya in the Mile High City

FTVLive has been telling you about the large number of people that have chosen to exit Nexstar’s KDVR/KWGN in Denver.

The station has lost about a dozen on-air people in the last year and many behind the scenes as well.

Westword did a story on the turnover and talked to KDVR/KWGN News Director Brian Gregory about all those that are leaving.

"You might have heard about it, post-COVID — some are calling it the 'Great Resignation,'" Gregory says.

Westword writes, Gregory acknowledges that "our jobs as journalists are tough. And they are not remote. You come to the office to do your work. You get out in the community to report on stories. You cover intense situations, horrific crimes; you’re stuck out in adverse weather conditions for long hours. You work mornings, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays. So this job can wear on you."

"Our people are our most important asset," Gregory notes.

Two people that work at KDVR tell FTVLive that there is another reason people are leaving the station.

Brian Gregory.

“If people are "our people are our most important asset" like Brian notes then how come he won't fight harder to keep people from leaving (I know of a few of them who would've stuck around) or show his appreciation to the ones who remain. But instead, he has the attitude that everyone is replaceable and they replace people with younger and cheaper individuals<“ said one KDVR insider to FTVLive.

Some have left the business altogether, and others have moved on to other jobs in TV news, like Meghan O'Halloran.

“Meagan is an absolute rock star — working for Sinclair’s national operation in D.C.,” Gregory points out.

He also admits that the station is down Producers as a number of them have left the Nexstar outlet as well.

"We’ve signed several rock-star producers over the past six months — and they’ve hit the ground running. Joshua Short and Talya Cunningham are rock stars,” Gregory says.

Maybe that’s the problem, maybe instead of hiring all these rock stars, the station hires Journalists.

Just saying….
