Boss Tells Journalists That Tweeting is Optional

You can walk into many TV newsrooms across the country and it is a good chance you will see a monitor tuned to a social media scoreboard.

Talent is told to post to social media and make sure that their social media score does not drop.

FTVLive has often asked newsroom managers to show us how if an Anchor posts a sexy selfie or a dance video that gets lots of “likes” how that increases the ratings or the credibility of the station.

No news manager has been able to give us an answer to that question.

Now, the New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet is telling his staff that posting to Twitter is purely optional. He says, "and for those who stay (on Twitter), "we encourage you to meaningfully reduce how much time you're spending on the platform, tweeting or scrolling, in relation to other parts of your job.

Baquet told the staff to "Tweet less, tweet more thoughtfully, and devote more time to reporting."

We can only hope that TV managers will follow his lead on this.

Although, we won’t hold our breath.
