CNN+ Makes Two Scaramuccis
CNN+ lasted about as long as Jeffery Toobin on a Zoom call.
Despite the fact that the PR people said that CNN+ was here for the long term, the service only made it a month.
Some will say that CNN’s new owner Discovery did not give the service enough time, but I disagree.
Incoming CNN boss Chris Licht told the staff that they were going to shut down CNN+ at the end of the month.
It was the right call.
FTVLive said that CNN+ was never going to be a success before it even launched. CNN has been losing viewers at a fast clip. If people weren’t going to watch it for free, how did anyone think that viewers were going to pay for it?
Despite cutting the subscription service price in half on the day they launched, very few people signed up.
Licht decided to stop throwing money and resources at a project that was doomed to fail from the get-go.
CNN tried to bill the launch of the streaming service as the most important thing to happen at CNN since Ted Turner signed the network on.
It made it a couple of Scaramuccis before the leadership decided to cancel the service.
The worst part of this is people believed Jeff Zucker’s bullshit and left jobs to come work for CNN+. Now, many of those people will be out of work.
They have been told that they can apply for other jobs within the company, but the truth of the matter is, that many will be out of work.
That is the worst part of all this.
But, Discovery is not just kicking them to the curb. CNN+ staffers will continue to be paid for three months and can apply for other jobs in the company.
If they don’t land another job within the organization, they will get six months of severance.
So basically they are getting 9 months of pay, which is a very nice gesture by the new leadership.
