NY Stations Now Required to Post Salary Information
Colorado was one of the first places that started requiring employers to post how much a job paid along with job posting.
Starting on November 1st, New York has put the same law into place.
This is a law that I would love to see become federal and be required across the board. I know many Journalists that see a job posted in a market they are interested in, take the time to apply, and start going through the interview process to try and land the job. Only to find out that the position is paying $5,000 less a year than the station they are currently working at.
But, here is why employers hate making salary information public.
Altice, who owns the News 12 stations in New York and New Jersey, just posted for News 12 Brooklyn. Here is a screenshot of part of that posting:
Here’s the problem, according to an insider at News 12, there are a number of current Reporters working at News 12 that are not making this much money. Some of those Reporters have been with the station for years.
Now, they are seeing that a new Reporter joining the company will be making more than them and current Reporters are now going in and asking for raises.
If the new law wasn’t in place, these Journalists would have no clue what the new hire is making.
Now they do.
So, you can see why companies don’t want to post this information, unless they are required to do so by law. But, for the working people out there, it helps level the playing field and gives them some very important information.
TV stations don’t want to see this law become widespread, but I and I know many others would love it to happen.
Stay tuned…
