Why One and Not the Other?
Last week, we brought you the sad news of the WBTV News Helicopter crash in which two station employees died.
WBTV Meteorologist Jason Myers and Sky3 pilot Chip Tayag were killed in the crash.
WBTV employees are still dealing with the tragic event, along with the two victims’ families.
A GoFundMe has been set up for both Myers’ and Tayag’s families.
As of the writing of this story, the Meyers GoFundMe has brought in just over $160,000 dollars and the Tayag GFM stands at just over $46,000 bucks.
But, the Meyers GFM has two donations from Gray Television CEO Hilton Howell. Both donations are for $50,000 dollars.
A look at Tayag’s GFM and you don’t see a donation from Howell. There is a $25,000 donation that is anonymous and that could be Howell, just guessing by the large amount.
Let’s say it is. We have some questions.
Why did the on-air person get more money? Because of kids? Larger family? Meyers had been at the station three years, Tayag for five.
Further down the donations, you see corporate colleague Sandy Breland giving both $500. David Dobson from Ross donated equal amounts for each too.
Why was one clearly Hilton and the other anonymous? Liabilities? Legal? Because one was the pilot and the other just a passenger?
Why donate to GoFundMe, which takes 2.9%, when you could donate directly to the family? Assuming Hilton is behind all of them, that’s nearly $3625 that goes to the platform and not families.
Sure, it is nice to see the CEO donate some big money, but it has left me with more questions than answers.
