Changing Their Tune...
On Friday, FTVLive showed you a tweet from the National Association of Broadcasters about the story of the Reporter that was hit by a car while doing a live shot.
The NAB applauds WSAZ Reporter Tori Yorgey for getting up after being hit and finishing her report.
In our story we wrote, “How nice would it have been if the NAB used this incident to raise awareness for the safety of MMJ’s?
The NAB has a large enough platform that they could have used this incident to raise awareness for Journalists’ safety in the field and the growing use of MMJ’s.
But they did not.
After FTVLive posted the story, it raised the heat a bit on the NAB, and only then, did they follow up with this post.
Sadly, it took being called out before the NAB saw something that they should have been on the forefront from the beginning.
I understand that TV stations are looking for ways to continue to cut their budgets in an effort to save money. But, it should never be done in place of your employees’ safety.
It doesn’t mean that there is not a place for MMJ’s and single-person news crews in this business.
Hell, I worked as a one-man-band long before the term MMJ was even around.
But, sending an MMJ out on a live shot in bad conditions, or at night, or into a sketchy area should never happen.
Working as a Journalist comes with some danger and some risk, most of us get that.
But, TV management’s goals need to be to try and reduce those risks as much as possible. Stop sending MMJ’s out in risky situations!
Maybe the NAB isn’t going to step up for the safety of Journalists, but FTVLive will continue to do so. And we will not hesitate to call out stations that don’t put the safety of their employees at the top of the list.
