Life After TV News....
Eli Roberts was hired as an Anchor at KFOR in Oklahoma City.
He paid to move himself from Israel to Oklahoma City and work at the Tribune station. But, when Nexstar took over the station, Roberts was sent packing after just a year at the station.
FTVLive caught up with Roberts to see what life was like after TV news? In an email to FTVLive Roberts said he took a different path than many other former TV news people.
Here is his email that he sent to FTVLive:
You guys love to highlight life after TV news, and I just wanted to say it is possible to do something other than become a PIO or a lie teller for a PR firm.
Nexstar completely ruined my career when they took over KFOR in the Tribune buyout, and cancelled my contract as the evening anchor through a bizarre and rarely used clause after I had just moved from Israel to Oklahoma City on my own dime. Ratings were up, I worked my butt off, and it didn't matter to them.
I didn't take the typical PR or politics route, and instead put myself through flight school to become a commercial pilot.
After 18 months of hard work, I've just taken a job as a flight instructor in Northern California to build hours for the airlines, which require 1500 flight hours. It's a hot industry post-pandemic.
I am so happy to have had my own path when the cost-cutting haters at Nexstar invalidated my career at one of the worst times possible. Nexstar has nothing worthwhile to say for themselves as they disrespect and frankly hate their employees.
Good riddance.
And I hope the others in the industry I love so much, who have been cheated, taken advantage of and treated like garbage despite giving everything to their stations, have some inspiration on what is possible on the outside if they ever need to jump.
Hope you have a great morning.
Eli Roberts
