Never Let the Facts Get in the Way of a Good Story

WBTW (Myrtle Beach) did a story on a Florida man that found a message in a bottle, down in the Florida Keys.

The note was dated 1987 and the message said this:

“Dear person who finds this I want you to try to return it to me my name is Zack Williams and if I’m dead by the time you try to return the just keep it I put it in the ocean at Myrtle Beach SC.”

It might sound crazy that a message in a bottle thrown into the ocean in 1987, is found in south Florida just this week.

Well, it turns out that after WBTW did the story, they also did a follow up.

Turns out Zack Williams did not write the letter, it was his son Noah. And the letter isn’t actually from 1987.

Williams said his son wanted to write a message, place it in a bottle and send it out to sea. However, Williams didn’t realize the message was placed in a canal while the family was vacationing in the Keys.

In other words the message in a bottle did not travel thousands of miles, but in reality it barely moved at all. Also, it wasn’t from 1987, it was from last week, when the family was on vacation.

But hey, other than that….cool story.
