Scripps to Take Newsy Over the Air

Scripps is looking to take their Newsy from the App store to over-the-air.

It appears that the company is also looking to move the operation to Atlanta and to use local Scripps stations as Newsy Bureaus.

The employees were sent out this message with the news release.

Today, we announce another step in the company’s journey to provide Americans with quality and objective news. Beginning Oct. 1, Newsy will launch as a free over-the-air (OTA) national news network within the Scripps Networks portfolio, building on its success with over-the-top (OTT) distribution. Newsy’s distribution over the air will make it the only U.S. news television network with ubiquitous OTT and OTA distribution.

Audiences will be able to find Newsy’s award-winning objective reporting across nearly 80% of the country or 96 million of the 120 million U.S. television households at launch – and in all major markets – primarily carried by ION stations, select Scripps local television stations and those of other station groups.

Newsy will continue to closely partner with the Scripps Washington Bureau in addition to the 41 local markets in our Local Media division. These partnerships with Scripps brands create one of the largest newsgathering forces in the U.S.

As more TV viewers ‘self-bundle’ by combining free television with subscription video-on-demand services, Newsy will build on its successes in OTT by joining the other Scripps Networks in providing viewers with high-quality free OTA programming.

Newsy will be headquartered in Atlanta, with construction of a new, state-of-the-art studio and newsroom alongside sister network Court TV, starting soon. It will have close to a dozen bureaus across the company, including in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver and Phoenix, among others. The network’s newsgathering and programming plans, under the leadership of incoming head of news Kate O’Brian, will be announced in the coming months.

I am proud of Newsy’s “be informed and not influenced” approach to news, and I look forward to the evolution of this brand as we further establish Scripps’ dominance in the over-the-air viewing marketplace.
