Let The Consolidation Continue

Other than the owners and shareholders of the big media companies, there are not many that think all the TV stations in the country should be owned by just a few companies.

But, that is the road we are going down and the Supreme Court is not going to stand in the way.

This week, the Supreme Court upheld a move by the Federal Communication Commission to relax media ownership rules, handing down a unanimous ruling that favors large broadcasters.

The decision will likely mean more media consolidation at the expense of minority and female media ownership.

This decision also tosses out a rule that had barred a single company from owning a radio or TV station along with a newspaper in a single local market.

In other words, a single media company can now own the local newspaper you read, the TV station you watch, and the radio station that you listen to. A single company can basically have control over the news that you are presented.

This decision is a huge win for the big broadcasters, but it is a loss to the consumer and to the diversity of broadcasting.

Just saying…..
