Really Howie....

Fox News media critic says the reason we have not heard about the growing hate crimes against the Asian community is this:

Maybe the reason the Asian community has such little visibility is the fact that the media hasn’t done their job when it comes to diversifying their staff and also covering the community as a whole.

As for FTVLive, we have tried to cover the issues and the lack of diversity in newsrooms around the country.

FTVLive traveled to the last Asian American Journalists Association conference in Atlanta to try and help give the organization some much-needed exposure.

It was heartbreaking to see how few News Directors were in attendance at AAJA compared to how many we saw a few weeks later at NABJ in Miami.

In the last few years, FTVLive has named a number of Asian Journalists to our list of the Top people in TV News. in 2018, FTVLive named DC Anchor Annie Yu as the Best Person in TV News.

In 2019, FTVLive named CBS Correspondent Weijia Jiang as the best person in TV news.

FTVLive has tried putting more focus on Asian Americans working in TV news.

I can’t tell you how many times I have spoken to News Directors that tell me they are looking to a Black or Hispanic Anchor or Reporter to fill a certain job. I have never heard a single News Director tell me that they were looking for an Asian.

Look at Howard Kurtz’s Fox News, how many Asians do you see on Fox?

Kurtz blames the little focus on the Asian community due to their lack of visibility in the media, yet his own network has done little to help correct that problem.

When it comes to diversity in TV news, it needs to involve all races. It needs to involve the LGBT community as well.

Don’t blame the Asian community for their “lack of visibility”…. make them more visible!

Tell their stories, share their culture and hire them to fill jobs at your station.

Their “lack of visibility” in the media is not their problem…..It’s YOURS!
