No Name Change, No Job
There is a lot of focus right now on the Asian community and the numerous attacks against Asian-Americans from coast to coast.
Much of the hate being directed at the Asian-American community is tied back to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many, including Donald Trump, would refer to COVID-19 as the “China Virus” and that in itself helped spread the hate.
The Asian-American community has long been a marginalized group and the lack of representation of Asian-Americans in local TV news has also been a problem.
It is hard to TV newsrooms to understand the Asian-American community when the station doesn’t have an Asian-American on their staff.
KIRO (Seattle) Anchor Siemny Kim says that she was really looking forward to landing her dream job of anchoring the news in Seattle.
But, she was told by the News Director if she wanted the job, she would have to change her name.
It seems the ND thought her given name would be “would be too difficult for a Monday-Friday Anchor.”
so, for her to land the job, she needed to change her name.
Imagine if you were a Polish-American and the News Director wanted you to drop the “ski” from the end of your name? How would you feel?
Kim was basically told that she was good enough for the job, but she had to do the job under a different name.
She decided to speak up about the incident now and we applaud her for doing so.
