Viewers Tuned Out the News in 2021
It appears that many have grown tired of TV news and that is especially true with cable news.
In 2021, weekday prime-time viewership dropped 38% at CNN, 34% at Fox News Channel and 25% at MSNBC, according to the Nielsen company.
Viewership also dropped at the broadcast networks, but the decline wasn’t as bad as cable. The decline was less steep but still significant at broadcast television evening newscasts: 12% at ABC’s “World News Tonight” and the “CBS Evening News;” 14% at NBC’s “Nightly News,” Nielsen said.
Many think the drop-off is due to the fact that we no longer have Donald Trump and his circus in the White House.
But, if you watch any cable news channel, it is a good bet that even today, you will hear the name Donald Trump mentioned quite often.
It seems that when it comes to Trump, cable news just can’t quit him.
The post Trump era had all the cable nets getting even more political and leaning to “their” side. Fox News saw NewsMax and OAN making up ground and they went further to the right.
CNN and MSNBC started pushing harder to the left.
Some say TV news is dying, I say what is disguised as TV news is dying.
Cable news for the most part is not news at all. It is opinion people yelling back and forth and it is the cheapest and easiest kind of television to produce.
There is still an audience for real news and 60 Minutes shows that in the ratings almost every week.
Good TV news is still wanted and watched by viewers.
Don’t ever confuse cable news as TV news.
It’s not.
