Nexstar to Go All-In on News Nation
By many accounts, Nexstar’s launch of News Nation has been a bust.
The company promised an unbiased cable newscast in primetime and while the idea sounded much needed, the News Nation newscast has yet to find much of an audience.
Local Nexstar Station Managers and News Directors have quietly complained that they are giving up promo time, news time and some sales spots in Nexstar’s effort to try and promote the cable newscast.
But, instead of throwing in the towel, Nexstar is doubling down on News Nation.
The company announced that starting March 1, WGN America is expanding its news programming to five hours on weeknights, and it’s be rebranded as NewsNation.
Nexstar announced the launch of two new hourlong shows: “NewsNation Early Edition,” which will be hosted by Nichole Berlie at 6 p.m. ET, and “The Donlon Report,” anchored by Joe Donlon at 7 p.m. ET.
By adding a 6PM newscast, it will pit many Nexstar stations against the company’s cable newscast.
“So, not only are we giving up promotion time for News Nation, now our newscast will be going up against them,” said one Nexstar executive to FTVLive.
The new lineup will join “Banfield,” award-winning veteran journalist Ashleigh Banfield’s upcoming news and talk show announced earlier this month. “Banfield” will also launch on March 1, and air weeknights at 10 p.m. ET the company says.
