Calls Continue for Cable Companies to Drop Fox News
There is a group on the left that is trying very hard to get cable companies to drop Fox News from their systems.
The Washington Post’s Margret Sullivan is the latest to pipe up on this and she thinks an advertising boycott is in order.
“Corporations that advertise on Fox News should walk away, and citizens who care about the truth should demand that they do so (in addition to trying to steer their friends and relatives away from the network),” Sullivan writes.
I’m always concerned when a media outlet calls for an advertising boycott of another media outlet.
It’s diving headfirst down a very slippery slope.
Anyone that reads FTVLive knows I am not a fan of cable news in general. I feel that cable news (Fox, CNN, MSNBC) have done more to divide this country than Donald Trump and those buffoons in Congress combined.
When it comes to Fox News, I think that Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, Maria Bartiromo, Lou Dobbs, and a number of others should not be on the air.
They preach hate, lie, and literally have nothing to add to the conversation. I could say the same for a number of people at CNN and MSNBC as well.
But, that is my opinion.
It doesn’t mean I think that Fox News or any other cable news channel should be pulled from viewers. It also doesn’t mean that we should call on advertisers to boycott them.
If an advertiser doesn’t like what Sean Hannity says and stands for, they should make the decision to pull their spots or not. Also, if Fox News management is ok with the fact that Tucker Carlson is preaching hate, that’s on them.
They should do the right thing, although they likely will not.
But, it is not up to me or any other media organization to dictate that action.
If you can’t stand watching Maria Bartiromo spill lies and bullshit, do what I do. Don’t watch Maria Bartiromo.
If people tune out, then Fox News will dump her or the others. It is that simple.
But, I don’t think a media outlet should be making those choices for other people. Let the viewers decide, let the advertisers decide. It’s not your job.
Look at it this way, when Goya came out in support of Donald Trump, I decided then and there that I would never buy a Goya product again. I don’t call for a boycott, I didn’t say that the company should be closed down. I just made up my mind that I was done with buying their product.
Just because I have made that decision, should I force my feelings on others that might want to eat Goya beans?
No….you let the market decide.
End of story.
