Nexstar Vs. CNN

A few days ago, FTVLive exclusively showed you the internal memo that was sent to Nexstar employees that demands that they do not share any video with CNN or the networks until Nexstar’s News Nation has had the chance to run the video first.

“This has become a cluster fuck“ said one Nexstar News Director to FTVLive.

CNN and other networks have been calling stations to request video and it is then they are learning about the new Nexstar policy that forbids the stations to send video to the networks.

Now, word is that CNN is looking to fire back and could hold video from the Nexstar stations.

“CNN is trying to pull the plug on their deal with all of the stations. So what are we at KTLA supposed to use for video to fill our newscasts? We aren’t a network affiliate,” says a Nexstar staffer to FTVLive, “The same for WGN and other independents in Nexstar. All this for a newscast with very few viewers! Stupid decision<“ the staffer added.

One Nexstar staffer says that WGN (Chicago) found themselves locked out from downloading CNN video yesterday.

“Of course, this punishes Producers and Assignment Editors for decisions being made way above
their heads,” said a Nexstar employee to FTVLive.

Some Nexstar managers are wondering why Nexstar VP of News Susan Tully did not make any phone calls to CNN or the networks to inform them and talk about the new policy.

Sources say that when Tully was questioned as to why she didn’t act, she told people to take it up with Perry Sook (Nexstar’s CEO).

“This was an asinine move by corporate, that put no thought into how this was going to hurt the local stations,” said a Nexstar GM to FTVLive.

Insiders say that the policy came straight from Perry Sook, but a number of Nexstar managers think that Tully and others at the corporate level should have stepped in and explained why it was not a good move.

Stay tuned on this one.
