Signing Off in Philly

WTXF Fox Philly Anchor/Reporter Joyce Evans is leaving the troubled Firm station this month.

Evans joined the station back in 1996.

As you know, the Fox O&O is having a bit of internal turmoil and at least some station employees think this caused Evans to move up her retirement date.

Here is the internal memo that was sent to the staff and obtained by FTVLive:

Congratulations Joyce!

As many of you have heard by now, our friend and colleague Joyce Evans is retiring. Joyce came to us back in mid-May to let us know that she would like to make this her final summer at Fox 29. I know I speak for all when I say our collective hearts dropped at the news, but our hearts are also uplifted by the 24 years of ind edible service Joyce has provided the viewers of Philadelphia, and the friendship she has given all those who have worked alongside her. Since 1996, Joyce has done it all at Fox 29. She has been a staple on the weekend anchor desk, providing our station with stability, substance and credibility. Her years as our station's health correspondent secured her a place in our communities as a trusted voice on medical issues, shining a light on important advances that saved lives. And then there was Joyce's phenomenal reporting, writing and story-telling skills. There are too many moments to name, but who will ever forget how she handled the crowds the night the Eagles won the Super Bowl, how she brought perspective and comfort to our city during the recent protests, her unique perspective from modern day Cuba, and how she opened hearts and minds to the plight of Alzheimer's Disease and one family's fight to use cannabis oil for seizures. Joyce has been a mentor to so many inside and outside our newsroom. Through the years, we've told some of our newest employees, especially reporters, to seek Joyce out for council, and for contacts. We would tell them "Joyce knows everyone, and everyone knows Joyce." It's so true. Joyce earned that trust by caring about her craft, and the communities that she ultimately served through her work. Selfishly we will always call Joyce our "own." But it would be wrong not to acknowledge that prior to her 24 years with us, Joyce had already successfully established herself in the business with a decade's run at KYW, and after successful stints in Miami and Virginia, and on network radio. Joyce has won countless awards, including Emmy's, AP Awards, and she was named Broadcaster or the Year in 2008 by the PABJ and just last year was inducted in the Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame. Joyce will always be part of Fox 29. She told me recently, "I'm not going anywhere, if anyone needs anything, even just advice, just give me a call." Thank you Joyce, you can count on that. Please join us in congratulating Joyce on a phenomenal career, and for the guidance she has provided and will continue to provide our industry. Stay tuned for more news on how we will "celebrate Joyce" in the coming weeks, before she leaves us on August 31st. We love you Joyce, thank you for being our "own" for 24 years, and hopefully forever.
