Station Apologizes for Anchors Throwing Bananas at Black Basketball Player
I guess you can file this one under, what the hell were they thinking?!
Harlem Globetrotter Maxwell Pearce released a video of his appearance on Gray’s WBRC’s (Birmingham) in which the Anchors starting throwing fruit at him.
Pearce accused the station’s anchors of racism as they threw fruit, including bananas at the basketball player.
It happened earlier this year on the station’s morning show Good Day Alabama. Pearce said that he delayed going public with his experience for fear of losing his job, but now hopes that by sharing it, it will help others.
“By sharing this story, it can inspire people to share their experiences of racism and discrimination,” he said in the video he posted to YouTube.
Pearce says that WBRC Anchor Clare Huddleston and weatherman Mickey Ferguson threw two tangerines and a banana at him during a segment. Anchor Mike Dubberly is seen standing beside Pearce and laughing. All three anchors are White.
WBRC released this statement about the incident:
“WBRC Fox6 would like to take this opportunity to again extend a heartfelt and sincere apology to Globetrotter Max Pearce. An on-air segment promoting a Globetrotters event with Mr. Pearce months ago was intended to be lighthearted. However, it became something deeply hurtful to our guest as the result of our lack of understanding. We are grateful for the several enlightening, educational conversations we have had with Max over the last two months. I was happy to have him on our show about racial inequality and faith that aired last Friday.”
Here is the video that Pearce posted and as far as we know, all the WBRC anchors are still employed with the station:
