Years ago, Mike Randall started at WKBW (Buffalo) as the station’s feature Reporter. He then moved into the weather department and not long after that, he was the station’s Chief Meteorologist.

But, now he is back to being the feature Reporter as he slowly makes his way towards retirement.

Randall works just 3 days a week, but has been missing from the station’s air for a couple of months, before recently returning.

He had one of his kidneys removed after cancer was found.

Now, he’s back at work. “I feel fine, but I lean to the left a little bit,” cracked Randall, whose left kidney was removed.

“I was told that it was curable as long as they take my kidney,” said Randall. “I’m fortunate it is something I have two of.”

Randall, who has been since 1983 low-keyed his situation. He initially told only family, friends and co-workers before announcing on social media last week that he was returning to work without indicating why he was off for months.

“It was a bad time, everything was closed because of Covid- 19,” he added. “I thought it was so depressing and didn’t want to add, 'By the way Mike Randall has kidney cancer.' ”

He had surgery April 17, got out of the hospital on April 20 and took about two months to recover.

As Randall recovered, he and Channel 7 News Director Rob Heverling had a casual conversation in which the Buffalo Broadcasting Association Hall of Famer was asked if he wanted to return to work or retire.

Randall, who has more than a year remaining on his contract, told Heverling he wanted to come back on his three-day-a-week schedule.

“It is not that hard, and I sort of like it,” he explained. “My wife (Kathy) would have liked it if I retired. She likes me around, believe it or not.”
