Huh? Good Idea...
Nexstar’s Austin Kellerman, who is the head of digital content and avid FTVLive reader, seemed to take a page out of the FTVLive playbook.
On his website, he said that he has been getting a lot of new social media followers because he has been posting out COVID-19 news.
He writes, “I’m not in a position to change their circumstances, but I can help provide a distraction for a few hours by sending dinner their way. I decided to put out daily posts, find someone who could use a pizza and then ship food.”
FTVLive started doing this back in March and the very first station we spent lunch to was Nexstar’s own WRIC in Richmond.
While we haven’t said much about it since March, FTVLive has continued to buy lunch for TV news people, many of whom are working from home and also trying to take care of their kids.
We also made up a T-shirt and gave over 100% of our profits from the sale of those T-shirts to Thrive Global’s First Responders First campaign.
FTVLive makes a good portion of our money off of syndicated advertising on our website. Just like TV stations, we have seen our incoming ad dollars shrink down to almost nothing.
As the month of April wraps up, it will end up being our biggest month ever in traffic to the site, but will easily be the month where we brought in the least amount of money in advertising dollars in years.
But, we know that there are people out there in much worse shape than us and we have been trying to do what we can to help people out.
Thanks to many of you that have become FTVLive Patrons, we have been able to continue to try and help out when we can.
This week we will go over one million people that are confirmed to have COVID-19. We have already passed 50,000 that have died.
Last year, somewhere between 24,000 – 62,000 people died from the flu in the United States. Over 50,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the past two months. It’s not the fucking flu….OK?
We tip our hat to Austin Kellerman for helping out and we urge those of you that can do so, to do so.
Some of you at companies like Tegna and Meredith are having your pay cut.
Believe me, I know first hand how it feels.
If you need some help paying a bill, reach out to FTVLive and I will see if I can help out. I’m sure I won’t be able to take care of all, but even if I can do a few, it’s better than nothing.
I urge higher-paid Anchors at stations like Meredith and Tegna, to maybe juts help out one lower-paid co-worker that is being furloughed or having their pay cut.
Pay their electric or water bill for May. Buy their family a meal, or do something else.
These times suck and it’s not easy for so many people, let’s try and help some others out if we can.
