All About Me and My Emmy
WFMY (Greensboro,) Sports anchor Luke Lyddon took home one of the hundreds of Emmys that were handed out in Nashville for the Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
He then proceeded to go on the air and spend a minute and a half talking about winning an Emmy (watch the video here).
Not sure the viewers really give a rip and I think those that were watching, were looking for sports news and not some guy patting himself on the back.
He has quickly changed his profile picture of himself kissing his Emmy and has pinned his big win at the top of the page.
Across the country, thousands of TV news people plunk down hundreds of dollars to be one of the thousands that get to walk up and collect what has almost become a participation trophy.
In a business that is full of giant egos, all about me TV and people that need affirmation about their jobs, the Emmys and TV news is a perfect fit.
John Howell, my old GM in Pittsburgh did not believe in the Emmys and would not spend a single cent of the station’s money on the Emmys and sending in nominations. I so respected him for that.
Many stations spend so much money each year on Emmy nominations, that you could literally take that money and hire another person in the newsroom.
Is winning one of the thousands of trophies worth more than having an extra person to help you cover the news?
What about the person that is called in and told they are not getting a raise this year, or worse, having their salary cut?
If the station didn’t spend $30,000+ on entering the Emmys, maybe they could have given that person a raise and they would have a few more dollars to feed their family.
Look, Luke is excited about winning and Emmy and he says it is a “dream come true.” Good for him.
But, I’m not sure you need to take up half the sportscast telling viewers you won an Emmy. I really don’t think they care.
Just saying…
