Where Are the Guys in TV News?
FTVLive talks to dozens of News Directors each day and we keep hearing the same thing. “I can’t find any male Reporters!”
And to show just how much this is true, in Buffalo, NY, the 52nd market, of the last 23 Reporter hires in the market, 22 of them have been women.
I talked to a couple of J-School teachers and they tell me that most of their classes are made up of a percentage of women.
So why is that?
One News Director says, “I think men have seen that TV news is low paying and with strange working hours, they have decided to choose another field to go into.”
So, I asked the News Director why don’t the women see it that way? She said that many women do, but there is still this urge to “be on TV” and that is many of the women that she finds that are applying for jobs.
So, in other words, the talent pool is now mainly female and they are more about “being a Reporter” than being a Journalist.
TV companies need to see this trend and do something about it!
To attract the best and brightest, you need to pay a decent wage and make the job attractive.
But, stations are more about saving money, doing more with less and just watching the bottom line.
Is it any wonder that TV news is attracting less and less high-quality people?
There are some that are in this business for the right reason and Journalism is their passion. But, finding those people is getting harder and we are seeing more people that just want to be on TV and maybe be a social media influencer on the side.
There is a problem that you and I can’t solve. The problem can only be solved by the people that own the stations and they are just busy counting their money.
I worry about the future of TV news….
