Are The Consultants Taking of Residence at CBS News

It looks like the struggling CBS Evening News is turning to local TV consultants to try and prop up ratings.

One Friday, fill-in Anchor Margaret Brennan used the word “breaking” three times during the headlines and again in the lead-in to the “breaking” bus crash in Utah that killed four Chinese tourists.

Brennan said details were “just now coming in.” Yeah. Details about a “breaking” bus crash that happened hours before air time. In fact in the story, the Reporter says the crash happened “this morning.” So, how is that “breaking news” in the evening? They also included the “Breaking News” in the lower third.

The story was big enough to lead the newscast and slug it “breaking news,” but not big enough to send a Correspondent to the scene.

Correspondent Kris Van Cleave voiced it the story in D.C., then ran outside for a standup close on a tree-lined sidewalk.

You can do better CBS.
