Man Climbs Orlando Stations Tower

Nearly eight hours after a 43-year-old man scaled a tower outside the WKMG studios Wednesday, he descended from the 400-foot structure where Orlando police negotiators and first responders were waiting.

He was transported to a local hospital for a physical and mental evaluation, according to Orlando police.

WKMG did not show live video of the man, just in case he fell or jumped.

This story reminds me of another story that is 100% true.

In my first full-time TV job at KTUL in Tulsa, the GM of the station, who was said to have been enjoying a few beverages in his office, went out the back door of the station and started climbing the station’s tower.

Photographer John Yates grabbed a camera was taping the GM as he climbed higher and higher up the tower before he finally came down. Many KTUL employees went outside and watched as the boss was scaling the tower.

Nothing happened to the GM, in fact, I’m not sure his bosses even knew that it happened?

But, one thing is for sure, if FTVLive was around in those days, I think this would have been a much bigger story.

Just saying…
