Staying in a Small Market
FTVLive gets asked for advice all the time and one of the first things I point out is this… if you are happy where you are and you can survive on the money, then stay put.
When I got into TV news, I felt like I had to keep climbing the ladder when it came to jobs and market size.
I started out as a Photographer, then become a Reporter, Assignment Editor, Producer, Executive Producer, Managing Editor, News Director and VP of News.
Looking back I can honestly say that the job I loved most was being a Photographer.
I also kept moving up in markets, because that was what you were “supposed to do.”
I can tell you, the higher you move in markets, the less fun the job becomes.
So, that being said…. my advice to you guys, if you are happy with where you are, don’t feel you need to move on.
Here is an example of that…
Joel Young is a Meteorologist at WTVA in the small market of Tupelo, Mississippi.
Young figured he would put in his time and move onto a bigger market. But, he ended up loving Tupelo and he just signed a new contract to stay put for a while longer.
He might have moved onto a job that pays more money, but as many of you will learn, the money is not what it is all about.
If you’re happy with where you are, stay there and don’t listen to the people that think you need to move on.
Props to Joel Young for doing just that:
