Station Says No More Packages Posted to Personal Facebook
Sources tell FTVLive that the news staff at WGEM (Quincy, Illinois) have been told that they are to no longer post news packages to their personal Facebook pages.
They are now being told to post those stories only to the WGEM Facebook page.
A number of staffers are letting their followers know about the change:
Now, Quincy Media is making the right call but telling staff not to post full packages to their personal Facebook, but if you ask us, they should not post full stories anywhere on FB.
Why present the full story on a digital outlet owned by Mark Zuckerburg?
Why not have the story posted on the station’s website, and just post a quick tease on Facebook?
Stations are relying too much on Facebook and not putting the effort into their own website. Make your website a destination and not Facebook.
FTVLive gets millions of visits to this website and we have not posted to our Facebook page in well over a year. Matt Drudge gets billions of views to his website and he has a single post to Facebook that was made back in April.
Facebook is like crack cocaine to stations. They addicted and don’t want to stop using it.
Work to make your station’s website a destination. Stop relying on Facebook to drive your traffic.
One day, Zuckerburg could say we are now going to start charging TV stations $100,000 a month to keep their page on Facebook. Would station’s still pay? Why would you continue to put the time and effort into a digital property you don’t own and you don’t control?
Make your station’s website better, put the money into it and make it a destination site for your viewers.
I know I sound like a broken record, but it is time for stations to look long and hard at their website and start putting in the effort.
Fuck Facebook…..do it yourself!
