The Problem with Facebook Lives

Stations love to do Facebook Lives and send viewers to a digital property they don’t own and have no control over.

I have never figured out why station’s do that and not put the time and effort in sending viewers to the station’s website, which they do own, do control and do sell ads for.

The other problem is stations often just put the live feed up on Facebook Live and often don’t even tell their crews that the live video is going out over social media.

This was a Facebook Live by Hearst’s WTAE in Pittsburgh after a police Officer Michael Rosfeld was found not guilty in the shooting death of 17-year-old Antwon Rose.

WTAE put up a live feed from one of the trucks, but it appears that the talent had no clue the signal was going out to viewers on Facebook.

Case in point: skip to the 14:59 mark to hear Reporter Sheldon Ingram call a station employee a “stupid ass.” Ingram later mutters “Oh God. Jesus” at the 17:50 mark. Skip ahead to 25:05 to hear a WTAE photographer say “fuck.”

Viewers clearly heard it all too, as some even commented on the Facebook Live about it.

The video has over 100,000 views and remains on the WTAE Facebook page and here it is below (for now):
