Moving to Weekends at MSNBC

In what clearly seems like a demotion, MSNBC is moving long-running afternoon anchor Ali Velshi is moving off weekdays and to the weekend morning shift.

Velshi, who currently hosts his daily show “MNSBC Live with Ali Velshi” at 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, will kick off a new weekend lineup in the new year with a show from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

After topping CNN in total viewers for the third year in a row, the network is revamping its weekend coverage. Velshi will lead into “AM Joy,” MSNBC’s highest-rated weekend show, hosted by Joy Reid.

Splitting his time between New York and Philly — where Velshi teaches a course at Wharton — the Emmy Award-winning anchor and author will also continue to serve as a fill-in MSNBC anchor during the week.

The weekend lineup also features Alex Witt, Al Sharpton, Kasie Hunt, Richard Lui, Kendis Gibson, and the newly hired Lindsey Reiser.
