The Day of Fake Video
Two pieces of fake video were the big story on cable news yesterday.
The first one was one which CNN and MSNBC obsessed about was the video depicting a macabre scene of a President Trump shooting, stabbing & assaulting members of the news media.
It was made by Trump supporters (surprise!) and was shown at a conference at Trump’s Miami resort.
The video was childish and stupid. But, if you watched CNN/MSNBC you would have thought that Trump himself made the video.
He did not.
The second video making news was also a fake.
ABC News embarrassed the entire news industry when it aired video on a story they titled ‘Slaughter in Syria’ and seemed to show fighting and bombing along the Syria border.
The footage is actually from a Kentucky gun range a few years ago.
ABC aired the video on both World News Tonight and Good Morning America. The network has since pulled the video and says they ‘regret the error.’
Of course this video got big play on Fox News and the right wing will try and have you believe that ABC News purposely aired this fake video and tried to pass it off as real.
I can assure you, this was not the case. What this was the case of is a network that hires inexperience kids and due to cost savings, does not have a solid editorial process in place, so stuff like this gets on the air.
This is a mistake that will haunt ABC News (and TV news) for years. The next time ABC lands some exclusive video, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone will say, “It’s fake, just like they did with that Syria video.”
In an effort to be first, ABC News blew a huge hole in their credibility that will hurt them for a long, long time.
