Bumped Up in Quincy
WGEM is moving Weekend Anchor to weekdays, but he’s going to have to get an alarm clock.
Don Dwyer is making the move to the station’s weekday morning newscast.
"Morning news is great. You're able to connect with viewers. You help them prepare for their day, rather than recapping things at night," Dwyer said.
Dwyer joined the morning team of Natalie Will and Jeremy Ledford on Monday.
His shift starts at 3:30 a.m., when most people are sleeping and it takes hours to pick out stories, go over scripts, check social media and respond to emails before the show.
"It's one of the fastest shifts because the hours go by fast as you're working. We're constantly looking for updates. While Jeremy is doing weather, we're literally looking up the latest on breaking stores," Dwyer said.
When he arrived in Quincy, Dwyer still saw himself as a sportscaster. He doesn't feel there was anything wrong with that, but he's happy to have added some skills.
"Morning news is probably something I didn't see myself doing seven or eight years ago," Dwyer said.
Now he's looking forward to gaining some new experiences and polishing his craft as a newsman.
