Rock and Roll Weatherman

Frank Mitchell, former chief meteorologist at KTUL (Tulsa) has landed a dream job.

He has been hired to watch the the weather for the outdoor music festival Rocklahoma.

“The great thing about this job is it’s putting together my two loves — rock and roll and weather,” Mitchell said.

Last yer at the festival, some nasty weather rolled in. “We had an out of town meteorologist who was watching the weather for us,” Joe Litvag, executive producer and senior vice president of AEG Presents, said.

“It had gotten to me through word of mouth that we had a local meteorologist who was here on site. I was introduced to Frank and he ended up coming backstage just to help us out with another set of eyes, which was really beneficial. We have developed a relationship with Frank and now have him coming to several of our other festivals around the country just because of his experience. But obviously, here, this is home for him. He knows the area very well. He knows the weather patterns very well. So he’s a huge asset to have on site for us, just kind of keeping an eye on things weather-wise 24-7.”

Mitchell said if he could do “this” year-round it would be a fantasy come true because it has given him an opportunity to meet bands and watch shows when the weather is quiet. “And when there is something going on, I still love weather,” he said.

Litvag said safety is “far and away” a priority for the festival. That’s why it’s important to have a meteorologist on site.

“Sometimes we have to make challenging decisions that the fans don’t like or the artists don’t like, but we will never compromise anybody’s safety,” he said.
