News Salaries are Up.... Slightly

The latest RTDNA/Hofstra University Annual Survey found that local television news salaries rose by 2.7% in 2017.

But if you work in the Weather department, we have some bad news.

According to the RTNDA survey, weathercaster position salaries went down and so did those news assistants.

Digital content director, assignment editor, news and sports anchors and executive producers salaries stayed the same and everyone else in the newsroom got a raise according to the RTDNA.

The RTDNA says that Multi-media journalist (MMJ) was separated from news reporter four years ago. Once again, reporters are paid significantly more money, overall, than MMJs.

The spread this year was $11,000. Last year, it was $12,000, but it was a bit closer the two previous years.

Some of that difference is due to market size: more reporters are in bigger markets. But even taking market size into account, reporters make more money.

So the take-a-way? Ditch the camera and just report, you'll make more money and you will have a Photog to schlep around the gear.

Sounds like a win-win to us.
