Throwing Shade in Cleveland
Scripps owned WEWS has a new Weather Anchor.
The station has hired Remeisha Shade and she says that she has loved weather since she was a kid.
Growing up in Huntsville, Alabama, Shade says she loved watching both national and local forecasts. She would not only watch, but check both for accuracy.
"I grew up watching the Weather Channel," the new meteorologist said. "If you ask my mom, she would tell you that as a teen I would sit for hours at a time watching the Weather Channel. She would ask me if I was bored," she says with a laugh. "I loved watching their style and delivery. It was really cool to me."
The 30-something Shade worked at several stations in Texas. Her first after college was at KBMT in Beaumont.
She ended up at KXAS in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for six years before joining WEWS three weeks ago.
Shade earned her bachelor's degree in meteorology at Florida State University. And she warns future meteorologist-wannabes to prepare themselves well for lots of physics, calculus and science.
It was so intense that she ended up making math her minor.
"Meteorology is actually based on a lot of physics and calculus. I had to take several physics classes in college, three different levels of calculus and engineering math while at Florida State. "The first couple of years are hard, because you have to get through the math first. After that, you are allowed to take the meteorology classes."
As a senior in college, she won the Miss Florida State University pageant. Shade -- who replaces Janessa Webb, who left the station in July for NBC in New York -- will anchor the weather at 6 and 11 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, as well as noon on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. She will fill in on other shifts, too.
