Man Busted for Dumping White Powder on Reporter

In Today's times, this has to be scary...

You're doing a live shot and a man runs up and dumps "white powder" all over you.

That's what happened to WSYR (Syracuse) Reporter Farah Jadran back in August. The man that police said did it was just indicated.

"Devin Helmer approached Farah Jadran and without warning, put on her an unknown powdery substance which caused her panic and alarm," the indictment reads.

Helmer is accused of placing what appeared to be a hazardous substance on the Reporter but was, in fact, an imitation. A key to the charge was that Helmer reasonably believed that it would appear to be a hazardous substance, causing "public alarm or inconvenience," according to the filed indictment.

Helmer appeared willing to plead guilty today so he could be released from jail. He's currently held there on $5,000 bail.

County Court Judge Stephen Dougherty said he believed a fair sentence would be probation. But he refused to take Helmer's plea until defense lawyer Mike Allen had a chance to go over the case with Helmer.
