Fox News Tops April But MSNBC has Banner Month

Behind the scenes, April was not a good month for Fox News.

The network was sued more times than we can count, their boss was getting pushed out again and Bill O'Reilly was fired.

But, ratings wise, Fox stayed on top of the cable news heap.

For the month of April, FOX News Channel topped all of basic cable in total day for the 10th consecutive month averaging 1.5 million total viewers. For the past three months, FNC has been the most-watched basic cable network in primetime, notching 2.4 million total viewers in April.

Marking 184 months as the number one cable news network, FNC also topped CNN and MSNBC total day and primetime with total viewers and Adults 25-54.

But, MSNBC also had a good April. None of their Anchors were fired, their boss is still there and their prime ratings are up 82%.

In prime time, MSNBC cracked the 1 million mark in total viewers and much of that was thanks to Rachel Maddow. Maddow has been on a role and is now beating Fox News on many nights.

Here is a look at the prime time ratings for April according to Nielsen:

PRIMETIME: 8-11PM/ET
FNC: 2,441,000 total viewers – up 28% (488,000 in 25-54 – up 42%)
CNN: 998,000 total viewers – down 11% (357,000 in 25-54 – down 4%)
MSNBC: 1,564,000 total viewers – up 82% (359,000 in 25-54 – up 61%)

CNN is the only cable new net not to crack the 1 million mark and the only network that lost viewers in the demo.

But, remember, CNN boss Jeff Zucker calls this CNN's golden age.

Must be fools gold.
