Morning Anchor Jummy Olabanji is leaving the DC station and bound for the Big Apple. 

Olabanji will become the weekend Anchor at NBC's flagship station WNBC. 

She has to feel like she won the lottery, leaving Sinclair for an NBC O&O:

 I am pleased to welcome Jummy Olabanji as our station’s new weekend evening anchor.  Jummy will joining our team starting April 26, and will also provide weekday general assignment coverage.

Jummy comes to WNBC from Washington, D.C. where she currently co-anchors WJLA’s Good Morning Washington and News at Noon. She previously served as an anchor and reporter with WTKR-TV in Norfolk, Virginia and at WCAV-TV in Charlottesville, Virginia. 

Additionally, Jummy has been recognized at the highest levels for her commitment to journalistic excellence.  She has won two Edward R. Murrow Awards for breaking news anchor coverage.  She has also been recognized with two Virginia Associated Press Awards and three Capital Emmy® Awards, including for Best Morning Newscast.  

Jummy is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a Master’s degree in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University. 

You will find Jummy to be energetic and professional.  She shares our station’s passion for the communities and neighborhoods of the Tri-State area and looks forward to working with all of you.

I would also offer a word of thanks to Jen Maxfield, who has filled in as a weekend anchor for the past few months and did a great job.

It is with a mixture of sadness and celebration that I announce Jummy Olabanj will be leaving WJLA after 5 years.  Sadness for us and celebration for Jummy as she begins a new position in New York City with station WNBC.  Since Jummy joined the station in 2011 she has been a valuable member of our morning team and will be missed.  On behalf of everyone at WJLA, let us wish Jummy good luck for the future and bid her a happy farewell.   Her last day with the station will be on Friday, April 21.
