Save That Cancer for Sweeps
WHNT (Huntsville) Anchor Jerry Hayes was diagnosed with cancer late last year, but he's talking about it now.
Yep...it's sweeps.
Hayes penned a very open letter to viewers on the station's website, including a tease to a story airing next Wednesday, which just happens to be the last day of the Feb. book.
Hayes writes, "You’re going to see me on TV the next few nights talking about my cancer story that will air Wednesday night, March 1st at 10 o’clock. A trip to the emergency room on a Sunday night didn’t turn out the way I’d planned. My gallbladder was not happy. Neither was I when I was told I had gallstones but they’d found something else as well. And it was not good news. They’d found cancer."
The good news? Hayes says that he is going to be fine.
But, we're sure that his News Director was not happy that Hayes got his cancer outside the rating book and they had to hold the story for 3 months into the new year.
TV Anchors need to learn, you're cancer diagnosis needs to happen during ratings for the full effect.
Try harder next time.
