New Mexico Station Finally Addresses Reporter's Arrest
Two weeks ago, FTVLive FIRST told you that KOB (Albuquerque) Reporter Joy Wang was arrested for DUI.
Ironically, up until Wang's arrest, KOB has been reporting on DUI loop holes and aggressively covering DUI cases in the area. Wang herself covered some of the DUI arrests, including a story on a Domino's driver that was killed by a suspected drunk driver.
Then on February 8th, Wang was arrested and charged with aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. Sources say that Wang hit a car in a parking lot and drove off.
FTVLive posted the story and not to anyone's surprise the station did not. The station that had been aggressively covering DUI stories, suddenly goes silent when one of their own was arrested.
The FTVLive story was shared thousands of times on Facebook and other social media. The drumbeat grew louder and louder for the station to report on their Reporter's arrest. But, they remained silent.
Then finally, not on air, but on Facebook, KOB News Director Michelle Donaldson posted about her Reporter's arrest that happened nearly 3 weeks ago.
Why Donaldson had to launch her own CSI investigation is a bit of a mystery. Why did you need to talk to the owner of the car that Wang hit? But, at least she finally did address a story that she should have done so weeks ago.
But, one person responded to Donaldson's post and seemed to hit the nail on the head.
You have to wonder if FTVLive did not report the story and it wasn't shared thousands of times on social media, would the station have ever addressed the Reporter's arrest.
Better late than never I guess, but for a station that is doing so many reports about DUI incidents and arrests, they should have certainly stepped up sooner than this.
Also, the station would come off more objective if they did something on air about the arrest. Do others arrested for DUI, get to choose if the story is only on social media.
You're a news organization....start actling like it.
