Life After News on the Radio
Pat Sweeney thought he had found life after TV news.
For years he did the sports for WDAZ (Grand Forks) but left for a video producer at the University of North Dakota.
He was living life after TV news, until they told him that his job at UND was going to be eliminated.
The longtime WDAZ Sports Anchor started contacting friends to let them know he would soon be looking for a new job.
One of his former WDAZ co-workers told him there was a newsAnchor job opened at KNOX radio.
So now the former sports guy is doing news on the radio.
He handles newcasts every half hour from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., working alongside longtime news director Doug Barrett.
"I was a little nervous not having done news in awhile," Sweeney said. "Sports is a form of news, but I hadn't done news news for 20 years. Talking to Doug, he didn't think it would be a problem.
"I'm just glad he's there. He's been with the station for 30-plus years and he knows everything there is to know about news in this area. I'm glad he's there, because I can learn from an experienced pro."
He still dabbles in sports, calling high school games at night. It's something he started even before joining KNOX full time.
