Dick is Dead

"Oh, My!"

Sad news for longtime sports fans...

Legendary sports broadcaster Dick Enberg has died of an apparent heart attack at his home Thursday morning in La Jolla.

His catch phrases of “Oh, my!” and “Touch ‘em all” punctuated his enthusiasm for broadcasting baseball, football, college basketball, tennis and golf during his career that effectively launched while he was working a physical education instructor and assistant baseball coach at San Fernando Valley State, known now as Cal State Fullerton.

His first sportscasting job in L.A. was at KTLA-Channel 5 as an anchor who did play-by-play of UCLA basketball and boxing from the Olympic Auditorium. That led to jobs on KMPC-AM (710) calling the Rams and Angels (1969-78).

His career moved to network sports, first at NBC for 25 years on the NFL and NBA, known as the voice of the Rose Bowl for many years with partner Merlin Olsen. He went to CBS in 2000 to continue on the NFL, college basketball and tennis. In 2004, he went to ESPN for tennis.
