Another Congressman Comes Out against the Sinclair/Tribune Deal
At this point, it is nothing more than grandstanding and the deal is all bout done.
But, another Congressman has come out against the Sinclair/Tribune deal and says that it is a threat to a "free and diverse press."
The Providence Journal writes that U.S. Rep. David Cicilline wrote to leaders of the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission Wednesday, expressing “strong concerns” about a potential merger between Sinclair Broadcasting Group and Tribune Media Company.
In a seven-page letter addressed to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, Cicilline warned that the deal could threaten media diversity and raise cable rates for American consumers.
“A single gatekeeper of local news and programming is a threat to the free and diverse press. There is bipartisan agreement that this merger threatens to cripple a ‘free and diverse press, a bedrock principle of American democracy,’” Cicilline wrote.
What the Congressman writes is true, but Sinclair has played the game perfectly. They have the FCC and the President in their pocket and this deal is as good as done.
