Louisville Anchor collapses During Newscast

WAVE's 7:30PM newscast just got started with Dawne Gee anchoring. But, this was not your typical newscast.

Shortly after the newscast started, Gee became ill and fainted live on the air. The station quickly cut to break.

When the newscast resumed, Meteorologist Kevin Harned informed viewers that emergency personnel were caring for Gee inside of the studio.

Harned accompanied Gee to the hospital after the incident and provided updates at the beginning of WAVE 3's 11 p.m. newscast Friday night.

Gee, cancer survivor is recovering, her mother Joanna Smith said. Her family awaits a diagnosis to explain slurred speech and her collapse on air.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Gee complained of a headache, possibly the result of her forehead striking the newsroom desk when she slumped forward, she said. Gee's slurred speech resolved immediately shortly upon arrival at the hospital, as did some numbness in her arms and legs.

"She is 100 percent better than what she was last night," Smith said. Doctors disagree on whether a stroke may have taken place, she added.

"They are trying to rule something in," she said. "I think they are looking more at stroke than anything. I am grateful that Dawne is OK.  The blessing is that she was not home by herself, or driving."
